We finally arrived at the shops. Kristin parked backwards, without scratching even a car or hitting the curb. “And they say women can park, puh!” I said jokingly. “Who says that?” Kristin asked. I gave her a look “Guys, of course.” She rolled her eyes “What do they know.” We smiled at each other and stepped out of the car. I threw my bag over my head and looked around. The shop was a local supermarket, just like many others of its kind. “So what do you want to eat tonight?” I asked her “I can probably make you anything you want.” Kristin’s eyes started to sparkle “Anything?” She repeated. “Pretty much, yeah” I shrugged.
Kristin got a shopping cart and we headed in. “Do you need to put your sunglasses up?” I asked her quietly. I wasn’t sure if people would bug her for autographs again. Sure she was wearing normal clothes, but they had recognized her on Broadway too. Kristin looked at me and something must have shown on my face, because she slipped them on. “Thanks for the advice.” I looked around the shop. Right now we were passing the fruit isle. “Do you want to have a strawberry cake tonight?” I asked as I looked for a box of decent strawberries. “Strawberry cake?” She sounded like she had never heard of such a thing. “Yeah, I’ll make a cake and decorate it with whipped cream and strawberries. It’s really tasty.” I answered with out looking back. I put the strawberries in the cart and turned back to get a lemon. Suddenly a thought hit me; I turned around and faced Kristin. “Do you actually have forms to make cake or anything?” Kristin shook her head “I don’t bake, so I’ve got nothing.”
We discussed what we were going to make and decided on strawberry cake, chocolate chip cookies, cheese cookies and popcorn to go with the movies and spaghetti Bolognese for dinner with a light salad. “Do you want wine with your dinner?” Kristin asked me. I shook my head “I don’t drink wine really. I’d rather have a coke instead.” Kristin smiled “yeah me too and I have plenty of coke at home.” I grinned “I know, I saw the picture of your fridge. I just don’t know how we’re gonna get all the ingredients we buy now in your fridge.” She made a little surprised O with her mouth. I waved the comment away “We’ll figure it out, we could always take out some of the coke. You don’t need to keep it in the fridge until you want to serve it.”
We passed the dairy isle to get butter, eggs, cheese, milk and cream. “Don’t you think it’s better to buy the pre-whipped cream?” Kristin asked me. I thought about it “I’d like to add a little cream to the Bolognese sauce actually.” Kristin looked at the fridge “They have small bottles of cream as well. We’ll just get both.” She took both out and placed them in the cart. “How much butter do we need?” I thought about the ingredients “three packages of butter should be enough, and then we’ll take a dozen eggs as well. Not that we need that much, but you can always have eggs for breakfast later on.” She took out the eggs and butter, while I went for the milk and cheese. Kristin looked at me “Why do we need milk?” I smiled at her “For the hot coco we will have when we’re watching movies!” “Oooh, I love hot coco.”
Next we walked over to the baking department. “Okay let’s see. We will need chocolate chips of course, white and brown sugar, vanilla extract, flour... you have salt right?” Kristin nodded while she was reaching for the things I mentioned on her side, while I took out the things on my side of the cart. “We also need baking soda, and nuts. You’re choice on the nuts.” Kristin took out hazelnuts. “Don’t we need lemon juice?” she asked me. I just shook my head “I rather have real lemon juice, that’s why we have the lemon in there.” I looked at the cart “We still need an apple.” I rushed back quickly to fruit isle and took out a nice big red apple. I face palmed my head, of course I would need onion and garlic for the Bolognese I rushed back to Kristin and the cart, but they were gone. I stopped dead in my tracks. Where had she gone? I walked over to the next isle and peeked in. Nope, they weren’t there either. It was the coffee isle. Did I need to bring coffee? Surely she had enough coffee at home.
The next isle showed our cart, but it was abandoned. Where was Kristin? I walked over to the cart and placed the apple, onion and garlic in. There was coco powder in the cart as well, Kristin must have gotten it. I pushed the cart ahead of me and headed for the isle with spaghetti. When I placed the spaghetti in the cart and reached for the canned tomatoes, Kristin jumped up from behind “I went for the minced meat.” She said and placed the meat in the cart. I jumped about a foot in the air, startled, giving a little girlish yelp. “Why did you leave the cart behind?” I asked, my heart hammering in my chest. “So you would know I’d be back for it. If I took the cart with me, it would seem I made a brake for it.” She laughed at her own joke. I swallowed audibly and cleared my throat. “Right, makes sense I guess.” I took out two cans of tomatoes and a little jar of herbs. “The last thing we need is the cake form and baking paper.”
We got the last things and headed for the check out. Kristin took out her wallet. “I can’t let you pay for all of this, Kristin. I feel so guilty! If it wasn’t for me, you wouldn’t even be buying so much stuff and...” Kristin placed her finger against my lips. My eyes flew wide. “Shush you.” She said sternly. “I told you before that I didn’t mind, if it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t be having so much fun today. Nor would I be learning some simple things to cook! Think of all the wonderful things I will be eating later on.” I could practically see her drool.
So I let her pay for everything and felt guilty about it. I couldn’t help it. But I suddenly had an idea. While Kristin was loading the groceries in to the back of her car, I told her I forgot something and rushed back in to the shop. I bought her a Dwarf Chenille Plant and a Clivia miniata, and a teddy bear saying “I heart you”. I had them wrapped up in wrapping paper so she couldn’t see what it was. When I came out she looked at me in surprise. “What’s that?!” she exclaimed. I smiled at her “This is for when you’re home. You can unwrap it there.” I quickly put them in the back with the rest of the groceries and closed the trunk. "But..." she started, but I shook my head, "No. you're not gonna argue with me on this. This is my way of saying thank you!" We got in the car andr drove off.
