“Come on Kristin!” Tommy called out from the front door. “We’re going to be late!”
“Would you hush?” Kristin said as she came down the hall. “When you have to do a three point turn just to get out of a room it takes a little longer!”
“Wow!” Tommy said as he stared at Kristin.
“What?” Kristin asked as she picked up her purse from the table.
“You look…” Tommy’s words trailed off for a minute as he thought of the best way to express his feelings. “Devine.”
“Please!” Kristin laughed. She was exactly 9 months pregnant and just standing up for more than 10 minutes wore her out. “I look like an elephant with clothes on.”
“But you’re a cute elephant,” Tommy said in a baby voice as he kissed the tip of her nose.
“Oh you’re just adorable,” Kristin said sarcastically.
Kristin had no idea what Tommy was up to. The only thing he had told her was that she needed to go out and buy herself a fancy new dress last week, no matter how much it cost. He had also made the mistake of bothering her before she left to go shopping. Kristin had taken no matter how much it costs to a whole new level.
“Are you really sure you’re up to going tonight?” Tommy asked her.
“Oh don’t you go starting that now,” Kristin told him. “You have been planning whatever it is we’re doing tonight for months. There is no way you’re turning back now when my torture is finally about to end.”
“Alright,” Tommy chuckled. “As long as you don’t overdue it.”
“I don’t really think it’s possible for me to overdue it,” Kristin replied. “At a certain point my legs just give out and I have to sit down and rest.”
“We should attach a pillow to your butt,” Tommy told her. “It would be a much softer landing!”
Kristin laughed at the image that appeared in her head.
“Very glamorous,” She replied.
“I thought so,” Tommy added.
“So are you going to tell me where you’re taking me?” Kristin said as she looked up at him.
“No way,” Tommy told her. “I have kept this a secret for too long to ruin it now!”
“But I want to know!” Kristin complained.
“Tough beans,” Tommy told her.
“Nice comeback Audrey Hepburn,” Kristin smiled at him.
“I thought so,” Tommy replied.
“Tommy,” Kristin said as she raised her eyebrows and gave him a cute little smile. “The baby wants to know where we’re going tonight.”
“Not going to work.” Tommy said.
“How could you deny your little baby that one simple joy?” Kristin pretended to plead with him.
“No fair!” Tommy complained. “Two against one!”
“Tell me, Tommy.” Kristin said. “Please?”
“Nope,” Tommy said confidently. “You’ll find out who it is when we get there.”
“AHA!” Kristin exclaimed. “So it’s a person!”
“Crap.” Tommy said under his breath as he turned away from her.
“Who is it?” Kristin asked. “Is it my mom? Did you fly her here for when the baby was born?”
“Not saying anything else,” Tommy told her.
“Come on!” Kristin begged.
“Nope,” Tommy replied. “Let’s go.”
Kristin stepped out the door as Tommy held it open for her and waited beside him as he locked it. Just as they were about to start walking toward the elevators she felt a strange sensation in her stomach; it wasn’t exactly pain but it wasn’t exactly comfortable either.
“What’s wrong?” Tommy asked.
“Nothing,” Kristin said as she began walking toward the elevators. “Let’s go.”
“What was that look on your face for?” Tommy asked as he followed her.
“Just a little indigestion, that’s all.” Kristin assured him. “Nothing to worry about.”
“Ok,” Tommy shrugged as they stepped into the open elevator in front of them.
