Kami and Jamie had been walking for an hour now. They had followed the water edge along the beach. It seemed that some palm trees were bearing fruit, but it didn’t look ripe yet. Some of them held coconuts, but Kami had protested against coconuts.

“You may not like coconuts, but that doesn’t mean the others can’t eat them. The more food we have the better our chances of survival.”

Kami kicked against a stone and sent it sailing in to the water. She looked down and where the stone used to be and saw a tiny crab scurrying out of the scorching sun.

“Crabs!”

Jamie turned around to face her.

“What? You have crabs?”

Kami slapped his shoulder and laughed,

“No you idiot! I meant we could try and catch some crabs. If we could make a cage of some kind, put in some food, we should be able to catch some crabs!”
Jamie smiled at her and wrapped his arm around her shoulder.

“That’s very smart of you Kami. And I’m sure that as a woman you know how to make baskets. So a cage shouldn’t be a problem.”

He looked down at her and smiled. The look on Kami’s face on the other hand made that smile wilt around the edges.

“What’s that supposed to mean, mister? Just because I’m a woman, it means I’m supposed to know all these things like cooking and cleaning and weaving baskets and what not? Next thing you’re going to tell me you want me barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen too!”

Jamie’s eyes widened and he swallowed audibly.

“I didn’t mean... I mean, I wasn’t trying to say...”

Kami pushed his arm away, kicked him in the shin and turned around.

“Men!”

She growled the word and headed back to camp.
