Darkness had now fully set in. Mark took out a sandwich and broke it in three pieces. He handed Oliver and Jamie a piece each.
“I’m beginning to be worried. The girls should have been back by now. We should go search for them.”
Oliver took a bite of his bread and chewed thoughtfully.
“I don’t think we can do much in the dark. I can’t help either. I’m sure they are fine.”
Jamie nodded in agreement.
“I’m sure they can take care of themselves... Well Kami and Alex probably can. I’m not sure about Kaylea to be honest. She is a total city girl; I doubt she ever went camping before.”
Mark rubbed the spot where Kaylea had hit him. A strange feeling was gathering inside his stomach. Dread. It was plain and utter dread. He was terrified for Kaylea. He sat back and went over the feelings he felt. It was weird, but he was afraid for Kaylea. And if he was truly honest with himself, he was also afraid for Alexandra. Not that she couldn’t take care of herself, but he was afraid that if she would get in to an accident right now, it would be partially his fault. If he hadn’t been such a jerk, they wouldn’t have stormed off. If they hadn’t stormed off, they could have been getting to know each other better now. It seemed that somehow it was his entire fault. He sighed deeply.
“Next time I open my mouth, put my foot in it okay?”
