Alex heard a scream echoing through the jungle. She had gone in to the jungle when Kerry started the cry. She knew the baby was just hungry, but the crying was giving her a head ache.
“Sounds like Kaylea.”
She thought about going there, but she knew she would never be able to get there in time. She wondered further in to the jungle, pushing herself to the limit. She wanted some piece and quiet. The others wouldn’t be back too soon of course. Kami had probably heard Kaylea’s scream and was now running towards her and if Mark had done something to Kay, than Kami would take care of it.
“All I want to do is find water.”
Surely there was fresh water in this place? A spring, a waterfall. Didn’t places like this always have a source of water? Another scream echoed through the jungle, but this one seemed different.
“I wonder if Mark screams like a girl too.”
Alex laughed at her own joke. She pushed aside a few bushes and took a step forward. Her foot touched empty air. She tried to grab one to something, anything! Her hand brushed a branch and she grabbed on. Before she could even balance herself, the branch gave way. She grabbed on with both hands and was suddenly swinging over a pond.
“Holy....”
The branch, which turned out to be a vine, broke and she plummeted towards the water. She hit the water rather hard, knocking the air from her lungs. She kicked with her legs and moved her arms to reach the surface. When she broke free, she gasped for air and went under again. She held her breathe and willed herself to relax; she wasn’t drowning.
“Guess I found the water.”
She kicked her legs gently until she felt solid ground under her feet. She walked up the shore and looked around. How was she going to get back? She had fallen about 12 feet. It wasn’t much, but she couldn’t climb back up.
