Alexandra undid the vine from the branch and rock and wrapped it around her torso again. She put the bandage around her head en bent down to put the bamboo shoots and leaves back in her make-do carry system. When she was all set, she picked up the branch and walked back to the camp.
“Oh what a beautiful morning, oh what a beautiful day.”
Alexandra started singing. She walked around the cliff she had fallen off and headed back the way she had come. After half an hour she felt a slight breeze seeping through the trees.
“That smells like the ocean.”
She walked a little faster until she cleared the jungle and her toes dug into the warm sand. She looked around for the camp, but couldn’t see it anywhere.
“Oh crap, I went the wrong way. Which way should I go now?”
She looked from left to right. She didn’t recognize this part of the beach. So she must have been on the left side of the beach, seeing as the day before she had been on the right side. She decided to walk to the left.
“Even if I’m going the wrong way, I should end up at the camp anyway. This is clearly an island so there’s no way off of it. A circle has no beginning and no end.”
She kept on walking, even though her legs began to protest after a while and breathing became difficult, she kept on walking. If she ignored her discomfort, it would go away. Sure. Her stomach growled, demanding the food it had been denied for hours. She had eaten a cracker when she had looked at the backpacks with Oliver. But that must have been hours before.
“Why can’t I read time from looking at the sun? And why can’t I just have a watch like every other normal person?”
She looked at the branch with the berries. Should she chance it? If they were poisonous, she would surely die. She thought about it, thought about it some more and when she almost reached out towards the berries; she saw a small curl of smoke above the trees in the distance. Camp was there and if Kami had returned, she would have the book and she could see if the berries were poison or not.
