Several days had passed slowly. Alexandra and Oliver had kept themselves busy with the vegetable garden, where small plants were sprouting, while Kami and Kaylea had looked after the chickens. They had several eggs a day now, now that the chickens had settled down in their new house. And after several discussions, they had decided to leave an egg every other day to see if they could get chicks. They placed the eggs inside the coop and hoped for the best. Oliver came walking out of the house, when he spotted Kaylea sitting further along the beach. Kami was nowhere in sight and Alexandra was asleep inside the house. “Kaylea? Is something wrong?” He walked over to her and placed a hand on her shoulder. Kaylea looked up at Oliver as she rubbed the tears from her face. “I have this strange feeling in my stomach that something bad has happened to the others. I hate not knowing where they are or what has happened to them. Don’t you?” Oliver smiled at her and sat down in the sand. He placed an arm around her shoulder and rubbed her arm. “Don’t worry. I’m sure they are fine. Before you know it, you can wrap yourself around Mark again and kiss him silly.” Oliver winked at Kaylea, who turned a deep red. “Shut up, okay?” She said as she punched him on the shoulder. Kaylea quickly glanced back at the house and looked out over the ocean again. “How’s Alexandra doing?” Oliver played with the shell in his hands. This time it was Kaylea’s turn to place her hand on his shoulder. “The baby reminds her of home, probably. And she might not like babies, she likes death even less. I’m sure she’s blaming herself for the baby’s death, even if it wasn’t her fault. I feel guilty myself as well. We promised that woman that we would take care of her child and we let it die.” Fresh tears rolled down Kaylea’s cheeks. She angrily rubbed at them, trying to make them stop. Kami was walking back to camp, when she spotted Kaylea and Oliver sitting together in the sand. She plunked down next to them and held up a few fish and crabs. “Anyone hungry?” She said with a smile. Kaylea scrambled back from the fish dangling in her face and swatted at them. Oliver ducked away as Kaylea’s hand came to close to his face for his own comfort. “You can place them next to the fire.” He said with a wave of his hand. Kami grinned at them, until she spotted the tears in Kaylea’s eyes. “what’s wrong? What happened? Did something happen to Alexandra?” Kaylea shook her head and smiled. ”Nah, I’m just a little homesick, I guess.” She chuckled and gave Oliver a smile. She then grabbed the fish and crabs from Kami and stood up. “I’ll go hang these next to the fire. Oli, you will have the honor of cleaning the guts out, because I don’t care how long we are on this island, that is one thing I will never do in my life.” Kaylea walked over towards the fire when she suddenly felt a tug on the fish. She stopped and turned around, only to see Oliver standing there with a mischievous look in his eye. He took the fish from Kaylea and dangled it in front of her face. “Are you sure you will never clean fish?” He said as he held the fish closer. Kaylea took a step backwards and held up her hands. “Yes, I am sure. You get those disgusting things away from me.” The closer Oliver came the harder Kaylea tried to get away from him. Suddenly Kaylea tripped on a stone and toppled to the ground. Oliver, tripping over Kaylea’s feet, fell on top of her. Both of them looked startled, before laughter bubbled up in their throats. “Oli, get of me, you big lug!” Kaylea giggled as she tried to push him off of her. Oliver looked at her and wiggled his eyebrows. “Don’t you like me being on top?” He said in a twisted voice. Kami burst out laughing behind them, holding her arms across her stomach. “Now that’s a good imitation of Mark, if I ever heard one.” Alexandra emerged from the house to see what all the racket was. “What’s going on?” She said as she rubbed her eyes. Oliver looked up at her with a smile. Alexandra looked sickly. She had dark circles under her eyes and her skin was almost ghostly pale. “I tripped on top of Kaylea, nothing more.” Alexandra looked at them rather confused. Kaylea tapped Oliver on the shoulder. “Excuse me, Oliver. Is that a stick in your pocket or are you extremely happy to be in this position.” Oliver looked a little startled and reached between them. Alexandra’s eyes got rather wide. She had no idea what was going on outside. When Oliver pulled his hand back, he had a large red fish in his hand. Kami took one look at the fish and collapsed to the floor, laughing her head off. “Oh… that’s classic, just classic!” Alexandra’s face held the ghost of a smile. Oliver grinned at her when he saw the sparkle of laughter in her eyes. It had been a while since she had smiled. Her smile got wider and she giggled, soon followed by all of them laughing as Oliver rolled off of Kaylea, who had a disgusted look on her face. Kami wiped at the red scales that decorated her abdomen. “Oh, that’s just really gross!” She thumped Oliver on his arm and got up. Flicking one last piece of fish scale from her stomach at Oliver, she turned around and headed for the house. But after taking several steps, a strange sound had her stopping dead in her tracks. “That sounds like horses.” Kami said as they all turned to face the sound. A dust cloud rose above the horizon and the sound of horses became louder and louder.
